Three years after the animated Simba strolled across cinema screens worldwide The Lion King made its Broadway debut in 1997, attracting audiences instantly and going on to pick up Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Scenic Design in a Musical and Best Costume Design. The latter award is particularly relevant as The Lion King sought to bring the animals of the Pride Lands to life in a live setting, utilising imaginative costumes and designs to bring the African planes to life.
