More than a century ago audiences sat down to witness the latest Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King And I. Based on the novel by Margaret Landon, it introduced audiences to the characters of the King of Siam and schoolteacher Anna, with some wonderful songs propelling the narrative along.

The success was felt with Tony Awards, critical acclaim and audiences appreciation so now, in the early 21st century, it is still revived and performed regularly to great success. With that in mind it is easy to see why the latest Broadway revival was met with great excitement and why its recent success will now be repeated in London’s West End.

Part of that excitement was caused by its cast, with Kelli O’Hara and Ken Watanabe playing the roles of Anna and the King of Siam. Both performers return for the production in London’s West End and will play a huge part, alongside director Bartlett Sher, in ensuring the musical gets a lot attention at the London Palladium.

The story is a timeless one, focusing on Anna as she is recruited by the King of Siam in an attempt to modernise his country. But during their time together, as their relationship blossoms, it is clear that this will be a story of great upheaval and unexpected developments.

But alongside Oscar Hammerstein II’s book is the music from Richard Rodgers (to which Hammerstein added lyrics). This music includes an array of stand-out songs that remain favourites of audiences around the world, ensuring continued success wherever the show is staged. They remain intact for this latest production and audiences will be humming those tunes long after the final curtain call.

So make sure you catch The King And I as this wonderful musical makes a triumphant return to London’s West End. It runs at the London Palladium in 2018.
